For a conference at its headquarters in Washington, NASA representatives have presented a plan Monday to search for extraterrestrial life using the  current technology  of telescopes. It is expected that in 2017 the telescope Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), which will operate in conjunction with the James Webb Space Telescope, to be launched in 2018, and will help to discern whether any of those billions of planets have a trace is launched chemistry suggest that harbor life. "What we knew five years ago is not perhaps between 10 and 20 percent of the stars around us have planets the size of Earth that are in the habitable zone," said Matt Mountain one of the scientists who prepared the launch of the James Webb telescope. "It is in our power to achieve a discovery that will change the world forever." "I think that in 20 years we will discover that we are not alone in the universe," s meanwhile astronaut Kevin Hand, who assumed that Europa, one of the satellites of Jupiter could support life.

Google's Gmail Now 'Totally Blocked' By China's Great Firewall

Radio Free Asia

Google's webmail service, Gmail, is now completely blocked in China, as the authorities prevent traffic routed via Hong Kong from reaching its 620 million netizens, experts and Internet monitors said.

"Chinese users now have no way of accessing Gmail behind the GFW," the Internet monitoring group GreatFire.org said in a post on its blog on Monday, in a reference to the complex system of blocks, filters, and human censorship known colloquially as "The Great Firewall," or GFW.

Before Dec. 26, they could still send or receive emails via email clients even though Gmail's web interface is not accessible, the post said.

"Chinese users now have absolutely no way of using Gmail, except using circumvention tools."

Previous disruptions were sporadic, and largely designed to make it look as if Gmail's own servers were unstable, it said.

"GFW has been doing it gradually and now it finally completed the grand mission of completely eliminating Google...in China," the group, which monitors the GFW, said.

Internet performance monitoring company Dyn Research also said on its Twitter account on Sunday that all Gmail traffic via the former British colony is affected by the block.

Dyn's vice-president of analytics Earl Zmijewski told the International Data Group (IDG)'s news service that all Gmail traffic to China through Hong Kong is affected.

Only users who have the software and some technical knowledge will be able to evade the block, he said.

Sharp fall in traffic

According to Zmijewski, the traffic is being censored at the level of IP addresses, a method often used by regimes to block content to a particular region, IDG reported.

Meanwhile, Google's own measurement of China-bound traffic showed a sharp fall starting on Friday, the company's real-time traffic measurement tool revealed.

Government censors last blocked Gmail temporarily ahead of the 25th anniversary of the June 4, 1989 crackdown on pro-democracy protests in Beijing's Tiananmen Square.

China has blocked access to Google search, YouTube, and Picasa photographs continually since 2009, according to Google's Transparency Report.

The GFW already ensures that popular foreign websites like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube are hard to access for the majority of Chinese users.

Google left China in 2010 after a showdown with the government over Internet controls, and currently redirects Chinese language users from the mainland to a search site run from its Hong Kong-based servers.

Gmail has long been accessible, however, and is viewed by rights activists and dissidents as potentially more secure than other mail services.

Disarray

Shenzhen-based Internet entrepreneur Zhang Jinjun said the authorities appear determined to cut off the Chinese Internet from the outside world.

"A lot of users think that Gmail has better security features, so they use it more than the others," Zhang told RFA on Monday.

"The servers are outside mainland China, which is a good thing for the privacy of individual users."

He said the block will throw large numbers of people inside China into disarray.

"This will cause huge inconvenience for a lot of users, regardless of whether they are commercial or individual users," Zhang said.

"This seems to run counter to the authorities' declared strategy of greater integration."

Chinese free speech advocates slammed the move, mostly via Twitter, as the homegrown equivalents are closely censored by the ruling Chinese Communist Party.

Investigative journalist Fang Zhouzi tweeted: "2014 will go down in history as the year that we had more Internet users than the rest of the world, and in which all of Google's services including the most secure Gmail were shut off behind the Great Firewall."

And Chinese free speech advocate Wen Yunchao, known by his online nickname Beifeng, wrote: "For them to block Gmail shows that the authorities aren't going to give any quarter at all."

Obama said so far that North Korea is behind the hack operation. North Korea said Obama is monkey. Now, Romney said China might help the North Korea in doing hack job. Experts rejected the idea that North Korea was behind the mentioned hack.

North Korea has another internet shutdown

Seoul: North Korea has suffered an internet shutdown for at least two hours, Chinese state media and cyber experts say, after Pyongyang blamed Washington for an online blackout earlier this week.

Xinhua news agency reported that North Korea's internet and mobile 3G network came to a standstill at 7.30am local time on Saturday (9.30am Australian eastern time) in Pyongyang and had not returned to normal as of 9.30pm.

Xinhua's reporters in North Korea found that the internet was "very unstable" throughout the day, the report added.
North Korea earlier in the day called US President Barack Obama a "monkey" for inciting cinemas to screen a comedy featuring a fictional plot to kill its leader, and blamed Washington for an internet blackout this week.

The isolated dictatorship's powerful National Defence Commission (NDC) threatened "inescapable deadly blows" over the film and accused the US of "disturbing the internet operation" of North Korean media outlets.
"The United States, with its large physical size and oblivious to the shame of playing hide and seek as children with runny noses would, has begun disrupting the internet operations of the main media outlets of our republic," said the statement. In the past few days, the websites of the state-run news agency and the newspaper Rodong Sinmun, two of the North's main outlets to the world, were among those that went dead for several hours.

"Obama always goes reckless in words and deeds like a monkey in a tropical forest," the statement said.

The earlier internet outage triggered speculation that US authorities may have launched a cyber-attack in retaliation for the hacking of Sony Pictures - the studio behind The Interview, a comedy set in North Korea.

Washington has said the attack on Sony Pictures was carried out by Pyongyang, but some experts have suggested Russian hackers may be responsible.

Meanwhile, Sony Pictures' Japanese parent company Sony Corp has been working for a third day to restore services to its PlayStation network as the FBI said it was looking into the disruption, which began on Christmas Day.

"We are aware of the reports and are investigating the Sony PlayStation matter," FBI spokeswoman Jenny Shearer said via email. She did not elaborate.

"If you received a PlayStation console over the holidays and have been unable to log onto the network, know that this problem is temporary and is not caused by your game console," Sony executive Catherine Jensen said on the company's US PlayStation blog.

Sony declined to say how many of the network's 56 million users had been affected by the attack.

A hacker activist group known as Lizard Squad said it was responsible for the network outage as well as delays on Microsoft's Xbox network; Microsoft quickly fixed the problem.

The group has claimed responsibility for previous attacks, including ones on PlayStation in early December and August.

The August attack coincided with a bomb scare in which Lizard Squad tweeted to American Airlines that it heard explosives were on board a Dallas to San Diego flight carrying an executive with Sony Online Entertainment.

Sony has been the victim of some of the most notorious cyberattacks in history. Besides the breach at its Hollywood studio, hackers stole data belonging to 77 million PlayStation Network users in 2011.

North Korean internet suffers more outages:DPRK blames U.S. for December 22 internet blackout

http://www.nknews.org/

North Korea’s internet suffered more outages on December 27 and 28, with in country reporters from Chinese media outlet Xinhua also claiming that 3G services had been affected.
The most recent internet blackout occurred yesterday at 1pm local time in Pyongyang, which followed a larger outage on Saturday 27.
“At Pyongyang time 7:30 p.m. Saturday, DPRK’s Internet and 3G mobile network came to a standstill, and had not returned to normal at press time as of 9:30 p.m. Saturday, according to Xinhua reporters and Chinese facilities based in the country,” Xinhua reported.
Though it is difficult to establish if the outages are caused by a cyber-attack, experts believe that North Korea’s connection problems are likely the result of private hacking groups running denial of service (DDoS) attacks on the DPRK’s limited internet capabilities.
Denial of service attacks involve overwhelming a server with more traffic than it can handle, and are different from the attack carried out on Sony last month.
“A DDoS attack is quite straightforward, doesn’t require much technical knowledge to carry out, and appeals to the “younger generation” which fashion themselves as hackers,” Frank Feinstein, NK Newschief technical officer said.
“It’s nothing compared to Sony – this is like firing a warning shot at a country in response to them nuking you,” Feinstein added.
While attribution of such attacks is difficult, two hacking groups claimed responsibility for knocking North Korea offline on December 22.
“Lizard squad”, a group which has a history of attacking Sony and Xbox gaming services, tweeted that “Xbox Live & other targets have way more capacity. North Korea is a piece of cake,” while a further group also sent tweets claiming responsibility for both attacks:

Organizations plan to send ‘Interview’ copies into the North

http://www.nknews.org/
Anti-Pyongyang activists hoping for launch of 100,000 copies sometime in January
Defector groups are planning to send copies of The Interview via balloon launch, the controversial movie depicting the assassination of Kim Jong Un, with the U.S.-based Human Rights Foundation sponsoring them.
The launch is expected for as early as next month.
Defector and well-known critic of the North Park Sang-hak, confirmed that his organization, Fighters for a Free North Korea, is receiving support from HRF including the full costs of sending 100,000 copies of the movie into the North.
Park had told the media he wants the launch to take place next month, and said they were currently in the process of preparing subtitles for the movie.
In response to Sony Pictures’ cancellation of The Interview’s planned theatrical release following a massive hack attack, HRF had previously announced a project called “Hack Them Back,” which would entail sending information into the North via hydrogen balloons, radio waves, and items smuggled over the Chinese border.
Those involved in the project are reportedly considering inviting Randall Park, the actor portraying Kim Jong Un in the movie, to attend the ceremony in which the launch takes place. Inside sources have toldNK News, however, that neither Sony Pictures nor Seth Rogan and James Franco, the movie’s stars, have any involvement in the project.
An email to HRF for more details on the project had not yet been returned.
The Interview has since been made available through online rental and screening at select cinemas. South Korea, however, is not screening it, citing inter-Korean relations.

Reviewing Airplane Crisis 2014: Malaysia Airlines Flight 370

Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 (MH370/MAS370)[a] was a scheduled international passenger flight that disappeared on Saturday, 8 March 2014, while flying from Kuala Lumpur International Airport, Malaysia, to Beijing Capital International Airport, China. Flight 370 last made voice contact with air traffic control at 01:19 MYT (17:19 UTC, 7 March) when it was over the South China Sea, less than an hour after takeoff, and the aircraft disappeared from air traffic controllers' radar screens at 01:21 MYT (17:21 UTC).[2][3] Malaysian military radar continued to track Flight 370 as it deviated from its planned flight path and crossed the Malay Peninsula; Flight 370 left the range of Malaysian military radar at 02:15 MYT while over the Andaman Sea, 200 nautical miles (370 km; 230 mi) northwest of Penang in northwestern Malaysia.[4] Neither the crew nor the aircraft's communication systems relayed a distress signal, indications of bad weather, or technical problems before the aircraft vanished.[5] The aircraft, a Boeing 777-200ER, was carrying 12 Malaysian crew members and 227 passengers from 15 nations.[6]
A multinational search effort began in the Gulf of Thailand and the South China Sea, where the flight's signal was lost on secondary surveillance radar, and was soon[7][8] extended to the Strait of Malacca and Andaman Sea.[9][10][11] Analyses of these communications by multiple agencies concluded that the flight ended in the southern Indian Ocean.[12][13][14] The focus of the search shifted to the southern part of the Indian Ocean, west of Australia and within its concurrent aeronautical and maritime search and rescue regions; accordingly, Australia took charge of the search effort on 17 March and later established the Joint Agency Coordination Centre (JACC) to coordinate the multinational search effort for Flight 370.[15] The current phase of the search is a comprehensive search of the seafloor, which began in October 2014, that is expected to take up to 12 months at a cost of over AU$52 million; the seafloor search follows a bathymetric survey of the search area, also ongoing, which began in May 2014.[16][17]
Despite being the largest and most expensive search in aviation history in recent times,[18][19][20][21] there has been no confirmation of any flight debris,[22] resulting in many unofficial theories about its disappearance. On 24 March, the Malaysian government, noting that the final location determined by the satellite communication was far from any possible landing sites, concluded that "flight MH370 ended in the southern Indian Ocean."[12][13][14][23]

At the time of its disappearance, and if the presumed loss of all lives aboard is confirmed, Flight 370 was the deadliest aviation incident in the history of Malaysia Airlines and the deadliest involving a Boeing 777.[24][25] Flight 370 was surpassed in both regards just 131 days later by the unrelated crash of another Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777—Flight 17—that was shot down over Ukraine on 17 July 2014, killing all 298
