Organizations plan to send ‘Interview’ copies into the North

Anti-Pyongyang activists hoping for launch of 100,000 copies sometime in January

Defector groups are planning to send copies of The Interview via balloon launch, the controversial movie depicting the assassination of Kim Jong Un, with the U.S.-based Human Rights Foundation sponsoring them.

The launch is expected for as early as next month.

Defector and well-known critic of the North Park Sang-hak, confirmed that his organization, Fighters for a Free North Korea, is receiving support from HRF including the full costs of sending 100,000 copies of the movie into the North.

Park had told the media he wants the launch to take place next month, and said they were currently in the process of preparing subtitles for the movie.

In response to Sony Pictures’ cancellation of The Interview’s planned theatrical release following a massive hack attack, HRF had previously announced a project called “Hack Them Back,” which would entail sending information into the North via hydrogen balloons, radio waves, and items smuggled over the Chinese border.

Those involved in the project are reportedly considering inviting Randall Park, the actor portraying Kim Jong Un in the movie, to attend the ceremony in which the launch takes place. Inside sources have toldNK News, however, that neither Sony Pictures nor Seth Rogan and James Franco, the movie’s stars, have any involvement in the project.

An email to HRF for more details on the project had not yet been returned.

The Interview has since been made available through online rental and screening at select cinemas. South Korea, however, is not screening it, citing inter-Korean relations.
