Austrian company Schiebel has won a contract for the production and supply of an undisclosed number of Camcopter S-100 rotary-wing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for the Royal Thai Navy (RTN).The UAVs will be deployed in 2020 to the Pak Phanang District of southern Thailand's Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, as well as "on the RTN frigate fleet to conduct" land- and sea-based ISR operations, said Schiebel, adding that this is the first time the RTN will be using a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) unmanned aerial system (UAS) for maritime operations.

It has a maximum speed of 220 kilometres per hour (140 mph) and a ceiling of 5,500 metres (18,000 ft). It is powered by a 55 horsepower (41 kW) Diamond engine and can carry various payloads, such as electro-optics and infrared sensors.

The Camcopter S-100 UAS is equipped with two payload bays and an auxiliary electronics bay. The stabilised day and night electro-optical / infra-red (EO / IR) sensors and thermal surveillance equipment help capture high-definition images, which are transmitted in real-time to the ground control station (GCS) via a line of site data link having a 180km range. The system can carry synthetic aperture radar (SAR), maritime radar, ground penetrating radar (GPSAR), signal intelligence (SIGINT) and communication intelligence (COMINT), communication relays, ATMID all terrain mine detector, light detection and ranging (LIDAR) scanners, loudspeakers, transponders, dropping containers and under-slung loads. The UAS is also equipped with Remotely Operated Video Enhanced Receiver (ROVER) system for surveillance and two side payload hardpoints. The system navigates using an inertial navigation system (INS) and a global positioning system (GPS), and is fitted with Riegl VQ-820-GU Hydrographic Airborne Sensor, Thales I-Master radar system and a CORONA 350 airborne sensor, and a Shine micro automatic identification system.

Schiebel's ground-control user interface offers field-proven mission planning and execution capabilities. Schiebels CAMCOPTER® S-100 Unmanned Air System (UAS) is an operationally proven capability for military and civilian applications. The Vertical Takeoff and Landing (VTOL) UAS requires no prepared area or supporting equipment to enable launch and recovery. It operates in day and night, under adverse weather conditions, with a beyond line-of-sight capability out to 200 km, over land and sea. Its carbon fiber and titanium fuselage provides capacity for a wide range of payload/endurance combinations up to a service ceiling of 18,000 ft. In a typical configuration, the CAMCOPTER® S-100 carries a 75 lbs/34 kg payload up to 10 hours and is powered with AVGas or JP-5 heavy fuel. High-definition payload imagery is transmitted to the control station in real time. In addition to its standard GPS waypoint or manual navigation, the S-100 can successfully operate in environments where GPS is not available.

Libya ordered four Camcopters in 2009, which were placed under command of the Khamis Brigade.   • The price of an S-100 Air vehicle alone is US$400,000 and the fuel system price including two air vehicles, the control station, payload, ground equipment, training, and logistics package will cost around US$2 million when production starts late in 2005.
  • YANGON/VIENNA - A UN expert has called on the European Union and Austrian authorities to investigate whether a Vienna-based company violated an arms embargo by selling drones to Myanmar. Christopher Sidoti, a member of the UN fact-finding mission on Myanmar, made the call after government documents showed Myanmar’s military-run Defence Ministry requested millions of US dollars to buy the aircraft.
