Kurt Leffler, the U.S. defense attaché in Thailand and chief of the Joint U.S. Military Advisory Group, said that more than 6,000 U.S. personnel would be sent to participate in the event, “the largest U.S. participation in Cobra Gold in a decade,” according to a report by BenarNews. Last year’s exercises featured less than 3,500 participants, including less than 1,300 from the U.S.

U.S. participation is expected to include 5,500 personnel, 64 fighter jets including six F-35 aircraft for the first time, and two naval ships.

One of the Indo-Pacific's largest multinational military drills has gotten underway in Thailand. The annual Cobra Gold exercise has brought together the military forces of Asian countries and the United States. The opening ceremony was held in northern Thailand on 12 February 2019. About 10,000 personnel from 29 countries are taking part. The acting head of the US diplomatic mission in Thailand Peter Haymond said; "Cobra Gold is a crown jewel of enduring US-Thai alliance and a pillar of America's unwavering commitment to a free and an open Indo-Pacific."

Exercise Cobra Gold is a recurring multinational and multiservice exercise hosted annually by the Kingdom of Thailand and developed by the Thai and U.S. militaries, scheduled to be held throughout Thailand. Cobra Gold 2019 is designed to advance regional security by exercising a robust multinational force from nations sharing common goals and security commitments in the Asia-Pacific region.

General Information
Source Cobra Gold was first held in 1982. It served as military training exercise to improve coordination between the armed forces of the United States and Thailand in both hostile military and humanitarian efforts. It also had the goal of strengthening ties between the U.S. and Thailand, the oldest ally of the United States in the South Asia region.[2] More recently, Cobra Gold has served a humanitarian mission, as military personnel deliver health care to the local Thai population, and as a testing ground for new battlefield technologies such as solar powered weaponry

The field exercises including variety of training, such as Amphibious Assault Demonstration, EOD mission, Close Air Support (CAS) and Combined Arms Live Fire Exercise (CALFEX) which is an exercise on strategical engagement by using various types of weapons. In civic action, were included humanitarian assistance and Non-combatant Evacuation Operation (NEO). NEO was led by Japan Air Self Defense Force (JASDF) during disaster relief operation. Mostly, a NEO used to move noncombatant personnel from dangerous area, usually caused by natural disaster For 2018, the US has urged to remove Myanmar as observers due to the Rohingya crisis.

In 1937, the Ministry of Defence promoted the Air Force Regiment to the Royal Thai Air Force which Directorate of Operations in the present day was a result of the requirement of organisation for operations, tasks that related to situations and technologies which currently changed and was able to effectively perform the mission.

In 1937, the Royal Thai Air Force promulgated the RTAF organisational structure of 1937 in accordance with military regulation on assignation of man power during peace time of 1937 on 6th of September. "the Directorate of Chief of Air Staff" was established to be responsible for the task of Chief of Air Staff which had 4 components consisted of 1st section, 2nd section, 3rd section, and 4th section. The 3rd section was assigned to be responsible of operations which considered to be the beginning of the Directorate that responsible for operations and appointed the chief of 3rd section to be the rank of "Wing Commander".

In 1940, the Royal Thai Air Force made an adjustment in organisation to be consistent of the responsibility in operations which cancelled the RTAF organisational structure of 1937 and promulgated the RTAF organisational structure of 1940 in accordance with military regulation on assignation of man power during peace time of 1940 on 16th of May. The adjustment was to change the chief of 3rd section from the rank of "Wing Commander" to be "Group Captain".

In 1952, the Royal Thai Air Force made an adjustment in organisation by considered of joining the unit that had the similar characteristic into the same group and also made an adjustment in performance policy for an agility and efficiency. The adjustment was to promote the 3rd section to be "Directorate of Operations" and assigned the position of Deputy Chief of Air Staff (Operations) to be the rank of Brigadier General as the Director.

On 24th of December was considered to be the founding of the Directorate of Operations.

Directorate of Operations is responsible for policy formulation, planning, directing, coordinating, controlling, developing, and executing operations. This includes maintaining capability of air operations, organizing RTAF structure, joint and combined exercises, operational evaluation and inspection, combat research and development, and international military cooperation.  Knowledge, regarding RTAF’s operations is managed under this direct

Approximately 4,500 U.S. personnel are participating this year, including U.S. Navy Seabees, the amphibious transport dock ship USS Green Bay, the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit and the U.S. Air Force 35th Fighter Squadron. Sunday, the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis also docked in Laem Chabang, Thailand, for a brief port call during its deployment to the Indo-Pacific region. Altogether, approximately 10,000 personnel are participating in the exercise. This year’s Cobra Gold comes just ahead of general elections scheduled to take place March 24 in Thailand, the country’s first national elections since a military coup in May 2014.

BANGKOK — Thailand and the United States on Tuesday hosted the opening ceremony for the annual Cobra Gold military exercise, the biggest activity of its type in the Asia-Pacific region with 29 nations taking part as participants or observers.
