The reason for fighting wars differs due to the cause of the war. For instance, the U.S. Civil War was fought over the issues of slavery and states' rights, while the Revolutionary War was a war for independence. The reasons wars are fought change over time. A series of devastating religious wars embroiled Europe during the 16th and 17th centuries. By the time the 18th century came about, major conflicts over religion in Europe were all but forgotten. Europeans began fighting over things such as dynastic succession, overseas empires, and political reform. The French Revolution was one of the first significant conflicts successfully fought in Europe over the issue of regime change. During this time, armies grew dramatically, growing from relatively small professional armies into large conscript armies. In other words, ordinary people were forced to enlist in the military.
