In 1843, the Siamese army captured the ancestors of the Tai Wang in central Laos and forced them across the Mekong River to Thailand as prisoners of war. Today, about 10,000 live in Savannakhet Province, Laos, and about 8,000 live in Sakhon Nakhon Province, Thailand. In Thailand, the town of Phanna Nikhom is their cultural hub.

Why Are They Named "Tai Wang"?
Their name directly reflects their ancestral geographic origin and ethnolinguistic roots: [1, 2]Tai: This is the overarching family name for a massive group of peoples in Southeast Asia and Southern China who share common linguistic, agricultural, and cultural traits (such as the Thai, Lao, and Shan). [1, 2]
Wang (or Vang): This refers directly to Mueang Vang (Vang District), their historical homeland located in the Savannakhet Province of central Laos. [1, 2]
Following historical migrations and conflicts, Tai subgroups traditionally appended the name of their home principality (mueang) to the word "Tai" to preserve their local identity. Therefore, "Tai Wang" literally means "The Tai people from the region of Vang.
