អំបូរជនជាតិ តៃ ក្រហម នៅវៀតណាម Tai Daeng

The Tai Daeng or Red Tai are an ethnic group of Vietnam and Laos. They speak the Tai Daeng language. In Vietnam, they are called Thái Đỏ and are included in the group of the Thái people, together with the Thái Đen, Thái Trắng, Phu Thai, Tày Thanh and Thái Hàng Tổng.

The evidence and context regarding their presence include:

Official Demographic Listings: While the vast majority of the Tai Daeng population lives in Vietnam (approximately 140,000 to 175,000) and Laos (around 25,000 to 28,000), global ethnographic databases (such as Ethnologue and Wikipedia's demographic tracking) list an "unknown population" or small diasporic communities of Tai Daeng residing within Thailand.

Historical Migration of Tai Groups: The Tai Daeng belong to the Southwestern Tai ethno-linguistic branch. Historically, various Southwestern Tai subgroups (such as the Tai Dam, Tai Daeng, and Tai Dón) migrated extensively across the borders of Southern China, Northern Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand due to regional conflicts, wars, and economic shifts over the centuries.

Cultural Assimilation (Thaification): Small pockets of Tai Daeng who migrated into Thailand in the past have largely assimilated into the broader Thai or Isan cultures. Because their language and customs are closely related to mainstream Thai and Lao, smaller tribal identities often blend into the local population, making their exact modern numbers in Thailand difficult to track separately in official government censuses.

Is there any idea of its name as Red Tais?

Yes, the name "Red Tai" (or Tai Daeng / Tai Deng) comes from a few widely accepted historical and cultural theories.

Historians and ethnologists generally point to three primary origins for the name:

Traditional Clothing: The most common and famous reason is their traditional attire. Historically, the women of this ethnic group are known for wearing distinct, beautifully hand-woven clothing that features prominent red elements, red highlights, or vibrant red borders.

Original Homeland: The name may also stem from their place of origin. They historically inhabited and traced their roots back to the Meuang Daeng district located in the Thanh Hoa province of Vietnam. In the Tai language, Daeng translates directly to "Red," making them the people from the "Red District."

Geographical Features: Another popular theory suggests they were named after the Red River (Sông Hồng) region in northern Vietnam, around which many Tai groups historically settled and migrated along.
