Bahrain will support Jordan with troops to help the Hashemite Kingdom's efforts in the fight against ISIS, it was reported on Sunday. A statement by the Bahrain Defence Forces said that the military assistance is part of the Gulf State's commitment to the efforts of the international US-led coalition to eradicate terrorism.
The decision to send troops was made in view of the bilateral ties between the two countries. The statement did not elaborate on troop numbers or whether they are infantry or other personnel.
According to Anadolu news agency, the Jordanian government has expressed its deep appreciation of the support from Bahrain and, indeed, similar aid from the UAE. Last week, the Emirates announced the deployment of a squadron of F-16 fighter jets to Jordan. "This consolidates the common conviction that the war on terror is a war for all Arabs and Muslims who fight to defend the true religion, our future generations and the security of the people," said a spokesman.
The announcement by Bahrain came as the country's ruler, King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa, visited Jordan to meet with King Abdullah II. The monarchs discussed bilateral relations as well as other regional and international developments.
Bahraini and Jordanian aircraft have been taking part in coalition air strikes against ISIS. Jordan increased its raids on the extremist group's sites after ISIS murdered one of its pilots, Muath Kasasbeh, earlier this month.
