The Siam Kingdom
Le Siam (ស្យាម ឬ សៀម สยาม Sayam Siem, Syâm, or Syâma) est l'ancien nom de la Thaïlande. C'est la transcription du nom donné au peuple thaï par les Khmers1. Ce terme vient du sanskrit श्याम śyāma (ស្យាម ឬ សៀម สยาม Sayam Siem, Syâm, or Syâma )« sombre សុំ», qui fait référence à la couleur de la peau de ses habitants2. Le royaume du Siam a été fondé en 1350 par le roi Ramathibodi Ier3. Ses capitales successives furent Ayutthaya (1350-1767), Thonburi (1767-1782), puis Bangkok (à partir de 1782). Le pays a pris le nom de Thaïlande en 1939, après la prise du pouvoir par le général Plaek Phibunsongkhram.
