Latest Updates on the U.S. Military Buildup in the Middle East

• 6× E-3 Sentry AWACS aircraft have arrived at Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia.

• 12× F-22 Raptor stealth fighters remain deployed at RAF Lakenheath and are expected to deploy to the Middle East.

• 24× F-15E Strike Eagles are currently deployed to Muwaffaq al-Salti Air Base in Jordan alongside a squadron of A-10 Thunderbolt attack aircraft.

• 48× F-16 fighter jets are either preparing for deployment or have already forward-deployed to the region, operating out of Muwaffaq al-Salti Air Base (Jordan), Al Dhafra Air Base (UAE), and Prince Sultan Air Base (Saudi Arabia).

• 30× F-35A Lightning II fighters have arrived in the Middle East — 18 from RAF Lakenheath and 12 from Morón and Rota Air Bases in Spain.

• 6× EA-18G Growler electronic warfare aircraft are now deployed and operating from Muwaffaq al-Salti Air Base in Jordan.

• 5× E-11A Battlefield Airborne Communications Node (BACN) aircraft are currently stationed at Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia.

• 3× RC-135 Rivet Joint signals intelligence (SIGINT) aircraft are now positioned in the region, including aircraft operating out of Chania Airport in Greece, with the third aircraft arriving earlier today.

• About 300 U.S. airlift flights have been carried out since Jan 16 using C-17 Globemaster III and C-5M Super Galaxy heavy-lift aircraft, along with chartered flights operated by U.S. Transportation Command (TRANSCOM).

• ~50 USAF tankers, including KC-135 and KC-46 aircraft, are positioned across the Middle East and nearby locations, including Al Udeid AB, Prince Sultan AB, Diego Garcia, Chania Airport in Greece, and Sofia Airport in Bulgaria).

• The USS Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group (CSG) transited the Strait of Gibraltar on Friday and entered the Mediterranean Sea. It is expected to remain on station in Eastern Mediterranean off Israel. Meanwhile, the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group remains on station in the Arabian Sea off the coast of Oman.

• In addition to CSG assets, five U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyers are operating independently in the region: two in the Mediterranean Sea, two in the Strait of Hormuz/Persian Gulf area, and one in the Red Sea.

Latest Updates on the U.S. Military Buildup in the Middle East

• 6× E-3 Sentry AWACS aircraft have either already arrived or are en route to the Middle East. Four Sentries were forward-deployed from Ramstein AB and RAF Mildenhall to Prince Sultan AB in Saudi Arabia, while two remain at Ramstein.

• 6× F-22 Raptor stealth fighters arrived yesterday at RAF Lakenheath, bringing the total to 12 jets. These jets are expected to fly to the Middle East within the coming days.

• 36× F-16 fighter jets are either already forward-deployed to the Middle East or preparing to deploy from Lajes. The jets were from Aviano (12), Spangdahlem (+12), and McEntire Joint National Guard Base (12).

• 30× U.S. Air Force F-35A Lightning II fighters have arrived in the Middle East, 18 from RAF Lakenheath and 12 from Morón/Rota Air Bases.

• 6× EA-18G Growler electronic warfare aircraft are deployed at Muwaffq al-Salti Air Base and are now operating out of the base.

• 2× E-11A Battlefield Airborne Communications Node (BACN) aircraft [carrying tail numbers N770AG and 22-9046] have departed Ramstein and arrived at Prince Sultan AB, Saudi Arabia. There are now 5 BACNs stationed there.

• 1× RC-135 Rivet Joint signals intelligence (SIGINT) aircraft is scheduled to deploy from Homestead to Chania, Greece. This will increase the number of Rivet Joints based there to two, as the aircraft that had been operating near Iran for the past month has now repositioned to Chania as well.

• U.S. airlift operations with C-17 Globemaster III and C-5M Super Galaxy heavy-lift aircraft continue in the region, with over 210 flights recorded so far since mid-January 2026. This includes around 21 C-5M flights to Al Udeid AB (Qatar), Prince Sultan AB (Saudi Arabia), and Camp Lemonnier (Djibouti).

• ~50 U.S. aerial refueling tankers, including KC-135s and KC-46s, are currently positioned across the Middle East (Al Udeid and Prince Sultan ABs), and nearby locations, as Diego Garcia, Chania in Greece, and Sofia Airport in Bulgaria.

The Saab 340 is a Swedish twin-engine turboprop aircraft designed and initially produced by Saab AB and Fairchild Aircraft. It is designed to seat 30-36 passengers and, as of July 2018, there were 240 operational aircraft used by 34 different operators.
340A - Max cruising speed 515km/h (278kt), economical cruising speed 484km/h (260kt). Range with max payload 1455km (785nm), range with max fuel 3975km (2145nm). 340B - Max cruising speed 523km/h (282kt), long range cruising speed 467km/h (252kt). Range with 35 pax and reserves at max cruising speed 1490km (805nm), at long range cruising speed 1735km (935nm).
Valued at $17.3 million, the two-year contract will cover support of Saab's airborne 340 Erieye radar, Saab 340 aircraft and ground equipment.
Saab announced on May 15, 2017 that it had received an SEK 1.35 billion AEW&C contract. The firm noted, "The order value amounts to SEK1.35 billion. Deliveries will be made from 2017 until 2020. The order is expected to be booked by Saab within the coming 6 months." The value in dollars amounts to around $153 million. The firm did not disclose the customer, as is its policy. Air Forces Monthly, however, reported "it is likely" that the Saab announcement pertains to the sale to Pakistan. The United Arab Emirates is also a customer of Saab products. In November 2015, it placed an order for the GlobalEye system. The UAE ordered two aircraft equipped with a variety of AEW&C systems at a cost of $1.27 billion. Earlier this year, the UAE confirmed it had placed an order worth $238 million for a third GlobalEye aircraft.
Negotiations between Thai and Swedish government officials followed, in order to conclude a formal agreement. Delivery of the Gripens into operational service of the Royal Thai Air Force is now planned for 2011, and the buy is divided into 2 phases: Phase 1 covers 6 JAS-39 Gripen fighters (2x JAS-39C single-seat, 4x JAS-39D 2-seat), including spare parts and training; and 2 Saab 340 turboprop aircraft. One Saab 340 will be outfitted as an S-1000 airborne early warning system with Saab’s Erieye radar, while the other will be a training and transport aircraft. The cost would be about 19 billion baht/ SEK 3.8 billion/ $600 million[1], spread within a 5-year budgetary commitment from 2008-2012. The Swedish fighters will be stationed at the air force base in Surat Thani, where Wing 7 covers the Gulf of Thailand, the Andaman Sea and the southern region of the country.
