The IAI Searcher (also known by the Hebrew name מרומית Meyromit - "Marsh tern",or officially in Israel as the חוגלה Hugla - "Alectoris") is a reconnaissance UAV developed in Israel in the 1980s. In the following decade, it replaced the IMI Mastiff and IAI Scout UAVs then in service with the Israeli Army.
An intelligence mini-UAV that began its service in 1992, and has since participated in routine security operations in Lebanon. It serves to locate terrorist targets and aids IAF planes while they carry out their attacks. In June of 1998, the IAF's Mini-UAV Squadron received improved 'Searcher 2' UAVs. The Searcher 2s have backswept wings, a new engine, a new navigation system and advanced communications systems.

The Indian Army has reportedly deployed its first batch of 25 Israeli-made Searcher Mark II unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) over its frontiers with Pakistan and China. I India has purchased 100 of the reconnaissance drones at a cost of $750 million and may double this order. The Searcher Mark II is produced by Israel Aircraft Industries. It can remain airborne for 16 hours and has a maximum range of 150 kilometers at the relatively high altitude of 18,500 feet, making it especially suitable for missions over the Himalayas.

Each Searcher-II system comprises 4 UAVs, a ground control station, a launch/recovery system, a ground data terminal, and a remote video terminal. The UAV can also be fitted with a range of surveillance equipment, from turrets with day/night optics, cameras, and laser markers; to SAR radars that scan the ground below; to electronic signals interception packages.
IAI lists external link the Searcher-II’s range as 300 km, with a total endurance of 20 hours in ideal conditions. Other sources external link also note the UAV’s maximum operating altitude of 18,500 feet, which will come in very handy in Afghanistan’s elevated and mountainous terrain.
In April 2007, Spanish reader Pedro Lucio alerted us to an official announcement that Spain’s Ministry of Defence had issued a EUR 14.37 million (then about $19.5 million) contract for unmanned air vehicles that would be deployed to support Spanish troops in Afghanistan. The contract was awarded to a consortium formed by Indra Sistemas and EADS-CASA, and Israel’s IAI; they will produce IAI’s Searcher-II-J UAV, which received excellent reviews from India external link in the wake of the 2004 tsunami.
